Our History

Humble Beginnings

Living Word Tabernacle began with humble origins when our founder, Pastor Jeff Holmes, started a small Bible study in the late 1970s. What started as an intimate gathering quickly began to grow, with attendance fluctuating between 20 to 50 people. Over the next decade, this small Bible study witnessed the powerful presence of God in profound ways. Many lives were transformed as individuals gave their hearts to Christ, and countless others received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. As Pastor Jeff and his wife, Paula Holmes, faithfully continued their ministry, the Lord called them to take the next step in their journey.

Early Expansion

In 1987, Pastor Jeff became ordained and recognized the need to effectively manage the growing congregation leading to the establishment of Living Word Tabernacle. After a few years, the Holmes family purchased a small building in Sheridan, Colorado. While it wasn’t the largest facility, the church had a one-floor sanctuary, with an attic used for music ministry and children’s groups. As the congregation continued to expand, it became clear that more space was needed. To meet the demand, Pastor Jeff came up with the innovative solution of purchasing a bus where the children’s ministry could gather for Sunday school while the main service took place. However, as winter arrived, this setup became unsustainable. God’s blessing soon allowed Pastor Jeff to purchase a home just a block away from the church, where the children’s ministry could meet and walk to for Sunday school. The house also became a sanctuary for those in need, providing shelter to those who required a place to stay.

Blessings and Trials

Despite these efforts, the church’s growth necessitated an even larger facility. Through God’s continued blessings, Pastor Jeff was able to purchase the building we now call home in Littleton, Colorado, on Fox Street. Here, Living Word Tabernacle thrived, becoming a place of worship where the anointing of God was evident in both the church and the surrounding community. Many lives were transformed as people accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Healings and miracles unfolded within the church walls and beyond, not because of Pastor Jeff, but because of his obedience to God’s call.

Pastor Jeff faithfully stewarded the church for many years, but in 2008, he faced a personal battle—he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Even in the face of this challenge, Pastor Jeff led with unwavering courage, continuing to shepherd the church through his illness.

When Pastor Jeff needed assistance, his beloved wife, Paula Holmes, began stepping into a speaking role during services. Pastor Jeff remained committed to teaching God’s Word, delivering his final sermon while in a wheelchair. On February 22, 2008, Pastor Jeff went to be with the Lord, leaving behind a powerful legacy. His final words to his wife Paula were, “Go forth with the church.”

Transition of Leadership

Though the church mourned the loss of its beloved pastor, Pastor Paula knew the work of God must continue. Just weeks after Pastor Jeff’s passing, Pastor Paula took the helm and began leading Living Word Tabernacle. Through her obedience to God, she cultivated a strong culture of outreach, charity, leadership, and the love of God within the church. Under Pastor Paula’s leadership, many more came to Christ, were filled with the Holy Spirit, and became lifelong members of Living Word Tabernacle.

Among these members was Larry Martinez, who committed over 20 years of service to the church under both Pastor Jeff and Pastor Paula’s leadership.

Present Day Leadership

Larry contributed to numerous activities, including men’s retreats, prayer meetings, counseling, and church maintenance. As the church continued to grow, Pastor Paula recognized that it was time to appoint a new leader. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Paula chose Larry to step into the role of Head Pastor.

Since 2020, Pastor Larry has faithfully led Living Word Tabernacle with passion and dedication. His love for Jesus and his commitment to the church have created a nurturing environment for both younger and older generations. Pastor Larry’s leadership has empowered a new generation to take on key roles within the church, with many stepping into teaching, administrative, and media positions. Under his guidance, Living Word Tabernacle continues to flourish, with a focus on winning souls for the Kingdom of God and building a community rooted in faith, love, and service.
